MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : Saints appeared to take an early lead eight minutes in. Moses Mbye reacted quickest to a loose Salford pass, giving the hosts the ball in the Red Devils half. A few tackles in, Saints shifted it from left to right, Mbye throwing the cut-out pass to Tommy Makinson who burrowed his way over from close range. The video referee took a few looks, but agreed with the on-field verdict of try. The try takes Makinson to seventh in the all time Super League try-scoring list, overtaking Ryan Atkins. Mark Percival couldn’t convert, 4-0 Saints led. Saints spent most of the opening stages deep inside the Salford half, but were unable to add to their early lead as the Salford defence held firm on their own line. Salford were reduced to twelve for ten minutes as we entered the 19th minute. Waqa Blake made a good offload to Mbye who broke, Daryl Clark supported on his inside but was pulled back by Joe Shorrocks, who was sent to the sin bin. Soon after we had another trip to the video referee. On the last tackle, Lewis Dodd kicked high to the left edge, Tee Ritson competed with Ethan Ryan for the kick and the ball came loose before Saints’ #25 picked it up and grounded it to score. Referee Chris Kendall said no try, and after a lengthy review the video referee agreed. With 14 minutes of the first half to go, the visitors had a penalty as Marc Sneyd was caught late by Curtis Sironen. Salford opted for two points, Sneyd converting to half the deficit, 4-2 Saints led. A couple of minutes later, Salford had another penalty in a kickable position as Saints got penalised for a ball steal. Sneyd again opted for two points and converted to level the scores, 4-4. Salford ended the first half the better of the two sides, but it was level at the break at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

Five minutes into the second half, Saints had a golden opportunity with a scrum ten metres out, as they forced the Red Devils into touch. The hosts took full advantage of it this time around. Sironen was able to spin out of a tackle and find an offload to Blake, who was able to dive over in the corner. Percival added the extras from the touchline, 10-4 Saints led. Saints created another decent opening two minutes later. The hosts shifted the ball through the hands down their left edge, Ritson broke before cutting back inside, but the returning Alex Walmsley was unable to collect his pass under pressure and Salford had it back. In the 51st minute we had another trip upstairs. Sneyd’s low kick was chased and supposedly grounded by Chris Hankinson down the left edge. The decision was sent upstairs as a try and after a long check, the video referee agreed despite it seeming that Hankinson hadn’t grounded it. Sneyd converted and we were tied at 10-10. Six minutes later, we had yet another trip upstairs. Dodd’s high kick was allowed to bounced and Blake juggled it before finding Makinson who strolled over underneath the sticks for what could’ve been his second try of the evening. Kendall ruled no try, and the video referee agreed, it remained tied. Midway through the second half, Saints did re-claim the lead. Off the back of a good break down the right edge from Harry Robertson, Jake Burns made an instant impact as he picked up the ball from dummy half and found Joe Batchelor who scored from close range. Percival converted, 16-10 Saints led. With less than twelve minutes to go, Saints were reduced to twelve men. Morgan Knowles went high on Joe Mellor and was sent to the sin bin, and Saints forced to defend a set on their own line a man down. Less than a minute later, Saints were reduced to eleven men. Batchelor hit Loghan Lewis late and saw yellow. Oliver Partington also received ten minutes in the sin bin though, for his reaction to the hit. Salford forced a repeat set on the Saints line, before reducing the deficit. The visitors shifted it right and Nene Macdonald was able to power his way over. Sneyd levelled it with the conversion, 16-16. Salford nearly snatched it with just over four minutes to go. Macdonald broke down their right edge before being tackled by Ritson. The following play the moved the ball from right to left but some great defending from Mbye pulled Deon Cross into touch as he looked destined to score in the corner. Mbye had the first attempt at a drop goal with twelve seconds to go, but his effort landed wide, and that was the way it ended in regular time, as the two sides headed for golden point extra time.

Saints won it with 30 seconds of the first period of extra time remaining. A good return from Robertson set the platform as Saints moved downfield, on the last tackle Mbye took aim again and his kick went over the uprights to give the Red V the two points.
