MATCH REPORT : Saints lost Jack Welsby just four minutes in. Saints’ #1 broke through the middle after collecting a Daryl Clark pass before struggling to get back to his feet following the tackle by Matt Moylan and had to be replaced by Moses Mbye. 15 minutes in, Saints were reduced to twelve men. Mark Percival hit Moylan without the ball and the referee sent him for ten minutes in the sin bin. The hosts took immediate advantage of the extra man. They moved it from left to right, created an overlap and Umyla Hanley threw a dummy and breezed through a gap to open the scoring. Darnell McIntosh converted, 6-0 Leigh led. Soon after Leigh had another try. Multiple penalties on the Saints line after an error allowed the Leopards to build pressure, off the back of it Edwin Ipape found Tom Amone from dummy half and he crashed over from close range. McIntosh added the two from in front of the sticks, 12-0 Saints trailed. Three minutes later, Leigh had their third try of the evening. Moylan’s high kick to the corner was fumbled by Waqa Blake into the arms of McIntosh, who planted the ball down. He converted his own try, 18-0. With nine minutes of the half to go, Robbie Mulhern broke downfield before eventually being tackled. Saints then got caught offside the following play and the hosts opted for two points. McIntosh added another two points, 20-0. Saints had a great chance with less than four minutes of the half to go. Moylan knocked on, Saints shifted it right but Blake was unable to score in the corner. Saints continued to apply pressure but a knock on from Noah Stephens gave the Leopards the ball back as we approached the break. One more try followed before the break. McIntosh broke down the right wing, threw it back inside and Leigh were able to keep it alive and Kai O’Donnell scored in the corner. McIntosh was unable to convert, 24-0 Saints trailed at the break. Seven minutes into the second half, we had a trip upstairs. Harry Robertson did brilliantly after breaking down the left wing, he escaped a tackle from Gareth O’Brien before seeing Ben Davies in acres of space and kicked for him to score in the corner. The on-field call of try agreed with after a check. Percival couldn’t convert, 24-4 Saints trailed. Leigh tried to add to their tries soon after. A flowing move from right to left saw Ricky Leutele dive for the line, but Tommy Makinson did well to hold him up short. 14 minutes into the second half, Saints were again down to twelve men for ten minutes. Lomax hit O’Brien late and was sent to the sin bin. Midway through the second half, Leigh had their fifth try of the evening. A break downfield by Jack Hughes saw Robertson make a good tackle. Off the back of it, Leigh went left and Lachlan Lam found Josh Charnley who scored in the corner. McIntosh converted, 30-4. Five minutes later, Leigh had another try. Lam broke through a gap, got past Robertson and was able to score to the left of the sticks. McIntosh added another conversion, 36-4. As we entered the final ten minutes, Leigh grabbed their seventh try of the evening. The hosts kept the ball alive on the last tackle throwing it from right to left, Moylan reaching out to score from close range after collecting Hughes’ pass. McIntosh couldn’t convert, 40-4. We had a trip to the video referee in the final minute, Charnley finishing acrobatically in the far corner. The on-field verdict of try was quickly agreed with. McIntosh converted with the final kick of the game, 46-4 it finished at Leigh Sports Village. Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their report. |
