Biography of Edwin Potts |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Edwin Potts RECS GUEST Edwin was born on the 13th of April, 1869 in Chorlton, Manchester. His father, Samuel, was a dairyman and ran his milk business from his home at 145 Brunswick Street in Chorlton. Indeed Edwin was still living there with his family in 1891. The census that year recorded him as working as a joiner. For whatever reason Edwin relocated to St. Helens in the early 1890s and took up employment as a glass cutter’s labourer. Doubtless, he was recruited ton the factory floor to play rugby for St. Helens Recs. Edwin guested for the Saints as aa forward on the 5th of April, 1894 in a home game against Swinton at Knowsley Road. The Saints won that day by 6 points to three, thanks to trees scored by Lloyd Davies and Howarth. The victory was gained despite the match report including a reference to the home team fielding a weakened side. That proved to be Edwin’s only game for the Saints. Edwin married the widow, Mary Ellen Mercer in Colton in the summer of 1898. Somewhat confusingly, Mary was from St. Helens and the couple alongside Mary’s son by her first marriage, John William Mercer, settled down to live at addresses at 22 Wilson Street and 55 Talbot Street in the town. Edwin was described in the 1911 Census as a plate glass packer. Sadly, his stepson, John, died later that year. Edwin was to remain at that address for the rest of his life, outliving his wife by some 25 years. He passed away in St. Helens in December 1954 at the age of 85. |
