Biography of Benjamin Howarth

HERITAGE NO :
Benjamin Howarth

FORWARD FROM ROVING FAMILY

Benjamin was born in Haswell Moor, Castledon, Durham in 1873. His father, James came from Wigan and his mother Margaret was born in Ireland. In 1881 the family were living in Fleet Lane, Parr, St. Helens. Ten years later, he had lost both parents and Benjamin was lodging at 57 Appleton Street in the Sutton area of St Helens and working as a labourer in a glass works.

He made his debut for the Saints on New Years Day 1894 at Knowsley Road. The opponents that day were the top side Runcorn. St. Helens won by 8 points to nil thanks to tries by Tom Sudlow and John Appleton and a goal from Billy Cross. His next two matches came close together in April 1894. On Thursday the 5th the Saints played Swinton at Knowsley Road. The match ended in a victory for the home team by 6 points to 3. Benjamin scored a try as well as William Lloyd Davies to seal the win. His last and final first team appearance was two days later on Saturday the 7th of April when the Saints were at home against Warrington. The Saints edged a tight contest by 3 points to nil; the points coming from a penalty goal from Billy Cross. In all three matches Benjamin played in the forwards.

In 1901 Benjamin was boarding in his childhood street at 155 Fleet Lane, Parr, St. Helens and operating as a coal miner. We are unsure of his whereabouts after this date but there is a strong possibility that he emigrated to Canada.
