HERITAGE NO : Jack Seddon RECS STAR AND LANDLORD OF THE HOPE AND ANCHOR Jack was born and bred in Aspull, Lancashire in 1868. His father, William, was a collier. In the Spring of 1889 Jack married Jane Ellen Middlehurst in St. Helens. In 1891 Jack was living at 62 Back Windle City in St. Helens. He was a star player for the St. Helens Recs but also played three matches for the Saints. Two of these games were Charity matches and the interchange of players from both Clubs was quite commonplace in this period. His debut for the Saints was in a Charity match against top side Liverpool on the 20th of April 1893. Jack played in the centres as the Saints run out winners by 17 points to nil. The points came from a brace of tries from Tom Sudlow and further tries from Patrick Dolan and Ralph Fields. Fellow Thatto Heather Tommy Foulkes booted over three goals. Tom Reynolds another Recs player and the Kendal Hornets winger William Wilson played in the same team as guests. Four days later Jack turned out again for the Saints against top team Swinton at Knowsley Road. The Saints were victors by 4 points to 2 thanks to tries from Tom Sudlow and Ned Ashcroft. His final appearance for the Saints came one year later on the 5th of April, 1894 when Swinton were again the opponents in another Charity match. Jack played at full back on that day as the Saints triumphed by 6 points to 3. The Saints scored two tries from William Lloyd Davies and Benjamin Howarth. A bustling crowd were also treated to the spectacle of other guest players in Saints’ colours namely Billy Briers from the Recs and England international from the Tyldesley Club, Buff Berry, who teamed up with his old chum Billy Cross in the half backs. Jack remained a committed Recs man. He was owner and landlord of the Hope and Anchor public house in City Road, St. Helens. Jack and Jane raised four children. Jack died in St Helens on the 9th of October 1930 at the age of 62. |
