Sam Jones was born in Bicknell, Holywell, Flintshire on the 28th of March, 1872. The area was a coal mining area and as several pits closed in North Wales workers sought similar positions in the rich coalfields of South Lancashire. Indeed, a couple of players for the Saints migrated from Holywell. In Sam’s case he moved to St. Helens around 1890 and lodged in Sutton with Thomas Scott and two other miners.

We can assume that Sam had held a rugby ball before moving to Lancashire. He made his debut as a forward in the away match against Morecambe on the 14th of November 1891. Despite the Saints losing that game Sam must have impressed those present because he more or less became a permanent member of the team for the following three seasons. In fact he played a total of 78 matches for the Saints and scored 5 tries in those games. His last recorded match for the Saints was in November 1894 as the team prevailed over Dewsbury at Knowsley Road. In that respect he missed out on becoming a Northern Union player less than 10 months later.

Outside rugby Sam married Mary Wilson on Christmas Day 1898 and carried on his work down the local pits. The couple had a daughter and three sons. Sam died in July 1945 at the age of 72.
