 HERITAGE NO : Houghton UNABLE TO IDENTIFY ONE TIME WINGER As the St. Helens Club became firmly established and their fixture list expanded, the Saints started to tour the country to face fresh opponents and to receive visiting sides as well. This was the case on the 30th of March 1891 when the Saints welcomed Mona, a team emanating from the Isle of Man, to Knowsley Road. The match was a closer contest than many expected, indeed the Saints trailed at half time to the Manxmen. In the second half the Saints dominated and came out on top thanks to a try from Joe Brownbill. Our mystery man Houghton played on the wing in the game for his one and only first team appearance. Of course it is highly likely that he played regularly for the Saints’ Reserves side. Houghton was a common surname in St. Helens at the time and exact identification is not possible at this moment. |
