Biography of Bert Mees |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Ethelbert Mees JOINER Bert was a local lad who was born in St Helens in the summer of 1868. His father, Thomas, was a joiner. In 1891 he was living in Dentons Green Lane and had picked up his father’s tools to work as a joiner. His older brother Alfred also played for the Saints. He played two first team matches for the Club both at full back. He also played for the St. Helens Reserves and would have struggled to get into the team with Tommy Foulkes being cemented in as the Saints’ custodian. His debut was in an away fixture against Lancaster on the 28th of February 1891. The match ended as a draw even though the Saints managed to score 7 minors to nil. His final match was almost four years later on the 17th of November 1894. Ethelbert took the long journey to play Ulverston only to end the match as part of another drawn affair. Neither team registered a single point. He was married to Elizabeth and they brought up seven children. For whatever reason he moved to Egremont near Wallessey in Cheshire and in 1901 he was living at 8 Darlington Street. Ethelbert was working for the local corporation as a joiner. By 1911 he had moved back to St. Helens and was living at 24 Queen Street in the town. The Census that year registered him as being unemployed though we suspect that he was very ill. He died in December that year at the age of 43. |
