Biography of Billy Matthews

HERITAGE NO :
Billy Mathews

OCCASIONAL SAINT

Billy was born on the 13th of September 1867 in St. Helens. His father, James was a flint glassmaker and the family lived close to the town centre.

For most of his career Billy donned the colours of local rivals, St. Helens Recs. The classy centre three-quarter was usually referred to as ‘Little’ Billy Matthews. Even in his in his early twenties, he was regarded as possessing a football brain well beyond his tender years. Although barely ten stones wet through, he was able to hold his own against much bigger players with his speed off the mark, together with his speed of thought. Billy was very evasive with the ball and possessed a convincing ‘dummy.’

He played for the Saints in the away fixture against Wigan on the 18th of February, 1891. The Saints came away with a draw that day and with positive signs that they were building a strong team.

Such was the sporting spirit of the time that, whisper it, Billy would play the occasional game for the Saints if they were short. At the Recs Billy formed a supreme centre partnership with Henry Gerard, who was also speedy and elusive.

Billy married Ann Glover in 1890 and they kept themselves busy raising no fewer than nine children. He worked as a rolled plate glass packer and lived for a long time in Birchley Street in the centre of town.

A real live-wire on his day, Billy was still fit and healthy after his eventual retirement from Pilkington Brothers many years later, regularly making eight mile walks around the Billinge area where he had moved. Billy died at the age of 81 in June 1949.
