HERITAGE NO : William Hodgson PHYTHIAN STREET GLASS WORKER William was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 21st of February, 1870. His father, named Christopher, was a glassmaker. As a child he lived at 106 Phythian Street, St. Helens. He was a centre three-quarter who played two consecutive matches for the first team in February 1891. On the 14th of February he was part of a side that lost away to Radcliffe by one goal, two tries and three minors to just three minors for the Saints. The following week he played at Wigan where the Saints held Wigan in a drawn game that saw both teams fail to score a goal or a try. William also played for the Reserve team at St. Helens. William married Esther Gore in the early January 1893 and they had three children. Eventually the family moved to Fidler Street. William worked as a glassworks labourer. He died in St. Helens on the 23rd of October 1931 at the age of 61. |
