 HERITAGE NO : George Bryan GRAFTER George was born in St. Helens in October 1871. He started work as a blacksmith’s apprentice and this certainly gave him the strength to survive as a forward on the rugby field. In 1891 he was living at 184 Westfield Street close to the centre of St. Helens. George made his debut for the Saints on the 14th of February 1891 in an away fixture at Radcliffe. The Saints went down that day to a rampant Radcliffe by 1 goal, 2 tries and 3 minors to just 3 minors for the St. Helens side. In contrast to that convoluted scoring system, his last match, an away fixture on the 28th of November 1891 against Blackley, ended in a scoreless draw. In all George made 8 appearances for the Saints’ first team. By 1911, he had relocated to 21 Chorley Street, St. Helens and was living with his wife, Mary (nee Ackers) and their three children. George died in his hometown in July 1939 at the age of 67. |
