HERITAGE NO : George Holt KIRKLAND STREET TO VANCOUVER George was a local lad who was born in St Helens in October 1867. His father, Benjamin, was a glass maker. The family lived at 32 Kirkland Street which was the heart of recruitment for St Helens RFC. George followed his father into the glass factories where he was employed as glass cutter. George was a speedy winger who played five matches for the first team His debut was against Duckinfield on the 22nd of November 1890. The away fixture ended in a draw with both teams scoring one try and two minors apiece. His final outing was in the home victory over Lancaster at Knowsley Road on the 11th of April 1891. The Saints scored one try and 7 minors to just two minors for Lancaster. He also featured in quite a few Reserve fixtures as well. He married Mary Winifred Cullen in the Spring of 1891 and they went on to have eight children. In the early twentieth century George and his considerable clan emigrated to Canada to set up home in Vancouver, British Columbia. He die in that city on the 27th of August 1954 at the age of 86. |
