Biography of Jack Hurst
HERITAGE NO : Jack Hurst LEIGH WIZARD Jack was born in Bedford, Leigh in January 1862. His father, James, was a beer seller. In 1881 he was living with his parents at the Crown and Anchor Public House, 1 Bolton Road, Leigh. He married Mary Alice Sutton in December 1883 and the couple went on to have three children. Jack was employed as an agent’s clerk. Jack enjoyed a very successful time playing for Leigh and he was equally comfortable at full back or in the three-quarters. He had began playing for the Leigh local team Bedford FC before joining the town team. His first match for Leigh was on the 19th of September 1885 against Ince. He has been allocated the number 64 in the Leigh RFC Founders list. Jack was recruited by St. Helens to play against the New Zealand Maoris touring team on the 24th of March 1889. The Saints also convinced the Kendal Hornets star Richard Craghill Beard to play in the same fixture. It was obviously a ploy to bolster the team but also an opportunity for Jack and Richard to face international opposition. At the time the Saints had a very cordial relationship with the Leigh Club with regular guest appearances happening in both directions. Beard was also great chums with Billy Cross, both players emanating from the great Westmorland side, Kendal Hornets. Despite these manoeuvres the Saints lost to the Maoris that day. Bu 1891 Jack had moved his family to Droylsden and was living at 2 Field Road in that town. He obtained employment as a railway clerk and stayed in Droyslden for some twenty odd years before returning to Leigh to live out his days. Jack died in Leigh in January 1929 at the age of 67.
