HERITAGE NO : Jim Slevin WIGAN CAPTAIN GUEST Jim was born on the 29th of November 1861 in Ireland. He ended up in Wigan and gained good qualifications to become a mechanical draughtsman. He was a an exceptional player on the field and an outstanding captain. Jim was fast and elusive. Furthermore, he had great strength in running with the ball. The Saints team and the great Kendal Hornets side had been invited to Fleetwood on the 10th of September, 1887. The occasions the opening of the promenade together with a brand new library. It was a really festive affair and the match attracted over 2000 spectators. A tight game was envisaged as the Saints were the first team for many moons to beat the Hornets on their own patch. The Saints were thrilled that Jim had accepted the invitation to play in the team on the day. He took up the wing berth during the match. As it happened the match ended in a draw with the Saints scoring 5 minors with the Hornets contributing 2 minors. As no goals or tries were scored the match was declared a draw. Back at the Wigan Club Jim was the King. He played in 290 matches scored 131 tries for Wigan in an era when most matches were low scoring.
