 HERITAGE NO : John Hampson PARR FORWARD John was a local lad who was born in Parr, St Helens in August 1861. His father, Matthew, was a coal miner. As a boy John lived at 18 Pennington Lane in Parr. In all John is recorded as playing in 6 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances is likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. He made his debut at Dentons Green, St Helens on the 25th of September 1886 against Bootle. John played in the pack of forwards and ended up on the winning side that day. His final first team game came win the 27th of November 1886 when the Saints travelled to play an away fixture with Birch. John was part of a Saints’ team that were defeated that day. He married Martha Matthews on the 20th of April 1890 and they went on to have a daughter named Nellie who was born in late 1890. In 1891 the family were living at 3 Oxley Street in Sutton, St. Helens and John was working as a general labourer. John died in St. Helens in May 1904 at the age of 42. |
