 HERITAGE NO : Thomas Basnett CLEAN FORWARD Thomas was born in Widnes on the 9th of February 1859. His father Samuel worked as a general labourer in a soapery. In 1881 Thomas was living at 32 Orwell Street, Widnes. His occupation was given as a soda chemical worker for the Visage and Sons Chemical Manufacturers. He had no doubt followed his father’ clean footsteps with regards to his job of work. Thomas made his debut for St Helens RFC against Birkdale Free Warriors on the 13th of September, 1884. It proved to be a home victory for the Saints. The tough forward went on to play 7 more occasions in the colours of the Saints. His final recorded match was on the 4th of April 1885 in the home match against Ossett. It is likely that Thomas played more matches for the Saints; the team-lists in his playing period are somewhat incomplete. Thomas married Glasgow born Matilda Boardman and they had eight children. He continued to work in the soap industries and lived in various locations around the town of Widnes. His last known address was at 32 Orwell Street in that town. He died in Widnes on the 24th of April 1924 at the age 69. |
