 HERITAGE NO : Billy James PETER STREET RECRUIT Billy was born in Wigan in August 1858. His father, Enoch was a mineral agent in that town. Enoch had originated from Bream in Gloucestershire and was no stranger to relocating his family. In 1871 Billy as a teenager found himself living in Holywell, Flintshire inn North Wales. By the early 1880s Billy had returned to Lancashire and had moved to Peter Street, close to where St. Helens Rangers played their rugby matches. Billy made his debut for the Saints on the 12th of January 1884 in the local derby game against St. Helens Recs. The Saints prevailed that day against their arch rivals. Billy played in the forwards that day and became a regular member of the team. His final first team appearance that we know about was on the 24th of November 1887 against Widnes. Unfortunately, Billy was in a defeated team that day. Billy married Sarah Jane Newton, a Widnesian, in early 1887 and they were to go on to have three children. He worked as a foreman in a Chemical Factory in St. Helens. The family later to live in Hamer Street in the town. Billy died on Christmas Eve 1973 aged 75 and his death was registered in Prescot. |
