Biography of Thomas Roberts |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Thomas Roberts VERSATILE CHANDLER Thomas was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 8th of September 1861. His father, James, worked as a labourer. Thomas was one of the young lads who started watching the Saints as a youngster. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. In 1881 he was living at 118 Peter Street in St. Helens and working as a tallow chandler. He married Amelia Crick and they went on to have 5 children. Thomas could play anywhere in the team, backs or in the pack of forwards. He made his debut against a St. Helens District team on the 8th of April 1882. Thomas ended up on the losing side that day. In all he is recorded as playing in 12 matches for St. Helens but because of the paucity of results and team sheets from that period, the number of appearances was likely to be higher. He was also likely to have played for the Second team as well. His lat recorded match was against Liverpool Rifle Brigade on the 5th of December 1885. We know that he was still in St. Helens in the 1890s living with his family in Kirkland Street. However, his wife died and Thomas decided to move to Blackburn. His trade seemed to have been largely extinguished by then and Thomas was earning crust by working as a general labourer. In 1911 he was resident at 22 Adlington Street, Blackburn. Thomas died in Blackburn in 1931 at the age of 69. |
