HERITAGE NO : George Hyde TEACHER George was born in St. Helens on the 13th of May 1860. His father, William, was a bricklayer from Kempston in Bedfordshire and the family lived at 203 Park Road, St. Helens. Presumably, William had moved to St. Helens as it rapidly expanded in the second half of the nineteenth century and the demand fro bricklayers was at an all time high. George was a nippy three-quarter who made his debut for the Saints in the local derby against St. Helens Recs on the 9th of October 1880. The Recs had the better of it that day and ran out winners. He continued to play for the Saints over the following five years, making his final appearance in December 1885 against Liverpool Rifle Brigade. George was an elementary schoolteacher, according to the 1891 census lived at 75, Croppers Hill, St.Helens. He married his wife, Maria, in 1888 and the couple went on to have two children. Sadly, George died early at the age of just 36 in 1896. He left behind his wife and two children who moved to live with their grandparents literally across the road in Croppers Hill. |
