Biography of Edwin Jackson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Edwin Jackson HAYDOCK CASHIER Edwin was born in Haydock, Lancashire on the 25th of March 1851. His father, John, was a bookkeeper for the local colliery which was an important and well paid job. Edwin followed his father into the same profession. His employment roles were often described as ‘cashier’; the term in modern parlance this would be best defined as an accountant. The family lived in Cottages in Haydock and Edwin was to remain in the vicinity for the rest of his life. Edwin played in the very first match for the newly-formed St. Helens RFC, a twenty-a-side game against Liverpool Rifle Brigade, on 24th of January 1874 at Boundary Road, St. Helens. He was one of 13 forwards! St. Helens didn’t trouble the scorers on the day at all; the opposition that day made five touchdowns, but didn’t convert any so the result was ‘a draw in their favour’! The man from Haydock had much in common with his team mates that day. There were several chaps who dealt with money in their day to day occupations. Socially, they were also in the well to do circles of St. Helens high society. After their rugby days were over, their social and business ties remained intact. From the genesis of the St. Helens RFC, no fewer than twelve players from the early matches had joined the Freemasons by the end of the century including Edwin Jackson who became a member in 1881. Outside rugby Edwin had to cope with the loss of the father at the age of thirteen leaving his mother, Mary (nee Fairhurst) to raise the family. By 1881 he was fully a qualified cashier, married to wife Elizabeth and in the process of raising a family which would comprise eventually of five children. He had also moved into Thorn Bank in Haydock and would remain there for the rest off his life. Edwin died on the 27th of April 1904 and left £2344 (equating to £184 000 in today’s money) to his widow. |
