MATCH REPORT : Wigan v St. Helens 24 March 1877 The concluding match of the season was played, which owing to a succession of unforeseen circumstances, has not been as successful as it could have been. St. Helens won the choice of goals and took the Swinley end playing with the wind at their backs but with a deficient team. The Wigan team kicked off and for a few minutes the Wigan team had decidedly the worst of the game. St. Helens immediately got a touchdown, Jackson by a good run, getting over the line. The try however was a failure. Wigan played better afterwards and gained two touchdowns but neither resulted in a goal. St Helens gained another touch down but again failed to kick a goal. Ends were changed and for the second half of the game, Wigan had much the best of it, as Leech got a touch down from which Clare kicked a goal. Peck was lucky from a loose scrummage gained another. When “no side” was called the score stood - Wigan 2 goals, 5 tries, and 5 touch-downs; St. Helens 2 tries and 2 touch-downs |
