MATCH REPORT : WARRINGTON V ST. HELENS 27 MARCH 1886

THE WEST LANCASHIRE AND BORDER TOWNS RUGBY UNION CHALLENGE CUP THIRD ROUND

A large amount ion interest was manifested in the meeting of these clubs at Warrington, and fully 6000 spectators attended. The match was supposed to be close and well contested but the reverse was witnessed. The home team played with great vigour and dash. St. Helens had the advantage of a very strong wind and they looked dangerous at times but the Warrington defence frustrated all attempts at scoring. Eventually after some fine play by the home forwards the ball was passed to Barnes who dropped a goal to the sound of great cheers. This was supplemented by Fair Turner who added a try before half time.

In the second half St. Helens were completely non-plussed by the dazzle of the Warrington back play. Fair Turner who throughout showed splendid form gained two tries, which were both converted into goals by Speakman. Barnes of Warrington was the best back on the field dropped a goal and scored two tries, again both improved by Spearman.

At “no side” the score lay: - Warrington by 5 goals, 5 tries and 3 minor to St. Helens nothing.
