Biography of Lance Hohaia



HERITAGE NO : 1193
World Cup Winner Hohaia joined Saints on a four-year deal from 2012. The 28-year-old played 29 times for the Kiwis and made 185 appearances for the New Zealand Warriors - a club which he made his debut for in 2002. At home at scrum half and full back, Lance was a true utility player whose speed, sound tackling and decision making were his greatest assets. Lance Hohaia helped the Kiwis win the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. He was also instrumental in guiding New Zealand to win the 2005 Tri Nations championship and capture the 2010 Four Nations championship.

Nicknamed `The Huntly Hurricane` by the media after growing up in the town of Huntly, he is one of only six players in New Zealand Warriors club history to spend 10 consecutive seasons with the Warriors.

Lance played mostly at half back for the Saints but was called upon to perform at full back or hooker when the team selection or injuries demanded it. His 12 tries in his first two seasons demonstrated his ability to support attacking plays and create havoc near the opposition line from dummy half.

His career with the Saints will be remembered in part on his day of greatest glory with the club. The 2014 Grand Final was only a few minutes into the match when Lance received a brutal attack from Wigan prop forwad Ben Flower. The incident left Saints without a recognised half back for the rest of the game as Lance failed to return to the fray. His winning Grand Final ring however served to recognise his service and significant contribution with the Saints.

Lance played his utility role through the early part of 2015 but recurring injury problems caused the sad early retirement of the Kiwi in April 2015.

Lance spent some time coaching the Davenport College rugby team in the USA. In 2019 Lance became Head Coach of Rugby at Aquinas College in Road Falls, Michigan, USA. His vast experience and expertise saw the team under his tutelage improve quickly into one of the highest ranking sides in the country.
