Biography of Paul Anderson

HERITAGE NO : 1149
Paul Anderson by Alex Service

The phrase 'Indian summer' can certainly apply to former Castleford front-rower Kevin Ward, who made a huge impression when he came to St.Helens in the early 1990s, seemingly with his best years behind him. Yet Paul Anderson's impact on the team also cannot be under-stated after joining the Saints after a hugely successful career with Bradford Bulls. Despite much initial head-scratching from some supporters, Paul soon silenced any possible criticism of him being in the veteran stage of his career. His sheer size and power was a marvellous addition to the Saints forward pack, initially under Coach Ian Millward and then, of course, Daniel Anderson. The vastly-experienced Paul was one of the cornerstones when the Saints achieved a marvellous treble of trophies in 2006, having lifted the League Leader's Shield in the 2005 campaign. What a front row it was with Anderson Cunningham and Cayless firing on all cylinders.

Talking about magic moments at Knowsley Road we will never forget his conversion from the touchline during his last league game against Leeds Rhinos on 9th September 2006, as the home side were cruising to an eventual 54-18 success. Needless to say, the ball went straight as a dye between the posts and 'Baloo' seemed remarkably calm about the whole thing! Incidentally, Jamie Lyon scored a hat-trick and kicked six goals himself that evening, but Paul's final kick remains firmly entrenched in the memory bank!

At the end of 2006, Paul retired from the engine room of the front row and became Assistant Coach at Huddersfield Giants, where he remained up to and including the 2009 season. He was extremely popular with both players and supporters alike and his signing proved to be one of the best pieces of business ever undertaken by the St.Helens club.
