Biography of Frank Wilson

HERITAGE NO : 853
Frank Wilson by Dave Dooley:

Frank Wilson was set an unenviable challenge when he signed professional forms for the Saints in the summer of 1968; he had to fill the boots of the legendary Tom Van Vollenhoven. Doubts over the quality of the new recruit were soon put to rest as he scored on his debut against Whitehaven and he finished his inaugural season top of the club`s try-scoring charts. For eight seasons Frank entertained the supporters with some sizzling touchdowns.

Frank first entered the national media spotlight when he scored a powerful try whilst playing for West Wales RU XV against the touring All Blacks. Wigan had been the first club to tempt Frank into turning professional but they had decided not to proceed - a decision that would baffle their fans for years to come. In the 1968 Lancashire Cup Final against Oldham Frank scored a blistering try to seal Oldham`s fate in the gloom of Central Park. The dazzling Welshman picked up a grubber- style restart with some deft handling skills. Frank ghosted past two Oldham defenders on his way to the halfway line. A mesmerising inside feint and swerving dash along the touchline beat the Oldham full back Murphy, as he cut an arc to plant the ball down near the posts. It was a try that brought the house down. Wilson produced another late try to condemn Oldham to a record Final defeat by 30 points to 2. Amongst Frank`s 25 tries in his first season was a stunning four try performance in the 40 points to 5 defeat of Swinton. His play that night demonstrated the range of Frank`s attacking skills - lightning speed off the mark, the ability to maintain pace over distance, a magnificent body swerve and great strength near the line.

The following season Frank suffered a cruel finale to the campaign. After finishing top of the club`s tryscoring and appearances charts, coach Cliff Evans sensationally left him out of the 1970 Championship Final. Wilson had netted 36 tries from 48 appearances through the season. Remarkably, Frank had scored a hat trick in the semi-final against Castleford just the previous week. However, in the same contest he had made an early blunder which must have preyed on the coach`s mind. Evans judged that second row forward Eric Prescott could snuff out the threat posed by Leeds winger Alan Smith.

Frank`s luck deserted him at the same stage of the season in the 1970/1 season. After scoring an excellent 27 tries from 45 games, including hat tricks against Swinton and Bradford Northern, Frank was injured prior to the 1971 Championship Final against Wigan. His replacement on this occasion was the Cumbrian Bob Blackwood. Saints prevailed on both Finals and Frank had to settle for the frustrating vicarious pleasure of watching his teammates lift the trophy from the sidelines.

His forty appearances in the epic 1971/2 season reaped Frank another 17 tries. He was a key member of the team that lifted the BBC TV Floodlit Trophy in a tough 8 points to 2 victory over Rochdale Hornets. Frank`s luck was to hold as Saints reached the 1972 Challenge Cup Final against Leeds. Frank`s play was impeccable that day as he nullified the potency of opposite winger Alan Smith. As Saints held on to a slender lead in the second half, Frank relieved the situation with a weaving run up field. There was no broader smile than Frank`s as he collected his winner`s medal. The signing of fellow Welshman Roy Mathias in the summer of 1972 provided an opportunity for Frank to try his hand in the centres. Frank played some of his best rugby in this position as his quick darts and ability to wrong foot defenders carved holes in the opposition`s defence. Wilson demonstrated such prowess by scoring 4 tries in the away match at Huyton. Though the trophy cabinet was unusually bare for the next two seasons Frank and the boys continued to play champagne rugby under the tutelage of Jim Challinor.

Eric Ashton`s squad for the 1974/5 Championship winning campaign was one of the most experienced and gifted ever to have been assembled at Knowsley Road. The team only lost three matches in their entire league campaign and finished the season some 9 points clear of their nearest challengers Wigan in the league table. Frank was an integral part of the side scoring 13 tries from 35 matches and providing excellent service to copperhead winger Les Jones.

In his final season at Knowsley Road Frank enjoyed great success in the BBC TV Trophy competition, scoring a hat trick in the second round against Hull and going over for a cracking touchdown in the Final against Dewsbury, which incidentally saints won by 22 points to 2. Frank had played 35 matches by the time the business end of the season had arrived. The centre berths at this point of the campaign had been commandeered by Derek Noonan and Eddie Cunningham. Initially Frank had been named a substitute for the 1976 Challenge Cup Final against Widnes but he was carrying an injury and coach Eric Ashton handed the substitute`s jersey to Peter Glynn. Frank played the following week against Leeds in the 21 points to 4 victory over Leeds in the second leg of the Premiership trophy but was left out of the side to face and defeat Salford in the Final. Willo`s curse perversely seemed to bring good fortune on his replacements and the team!

Despite several `Final disappointments` Frank had collected almost a full set of winners` medals with the Saints. He scored 175 tries in 310 appearances placing him ninth on the list of all-time top try scorers at the club. He played the vast majority of possible first team matches during his eight seasons and entertained the spectators royally. Frank was one of those players who would bring an anticipating excitement to the crowd whenever he received the ball.

Whilst at the Saints Frank made fourteen appearances for his native Wales. He scored a try for his country in the 14 points to 7 defeat by France in the World Cup in Toulouse on February 2nd, 1975.

Alex Service updates the Frank Wilson story.

Former rugby league stars gathered at the Black Bull in St Helens on Tuesday 13th December 2022 afternoon for their annual get together with a number of different clubs and eras represented. Tales from club games and international clashes in the scarlet jerseys was the order of the day, with the likes of Kel Coslett, Roy Mathias, Clive Griffiths part of the Saints’ contingent. But it was really a rugby league cavalcade of stars with Jim Mills, George Nicholls [who played for Cardiff Blue Dragons], Chris Arkwright, Paul and Paddy Loughlin and a chipper Billy Boston amongst those on view.

It was also a fitting occasion for the St Helens RFC Players Association to induct Frank Wilson into their Hall of Fame. Sadly, Frank could not be present, but everyone agreed that he was a most worthy incumbent into this most prestigious Roll of Honour. “Following on from Mel James last year, it seemed an appropriate occasion to celebrate Frank Wilson’s career with Saints and his contribution to the game as a whole,” said Tommy Frodsham. “The reaction from those present proved what a popular choice it was.”

Born in Cardiff in 1944 and a product of Llandaff North, Frank made his debut for his home city against the Barbarians on 7th October 1964. The Cardiff RUFC website in their Black History Month described him as “not the first person of colour to represent his home city at rugby union. But he was the first Cardaffian of colour to become a first team fixture and begin making a case for international honours.”

Frank played in a strong Cardiff team with the likes of Barry John and Gareth Edwards, representing East Wales against the All Blacks in 1967 before taking the professional route north. Initially, he trialled with Wigan, but they decided against signing him – a decision that would come back to haunt them! Along came the Saints and they secured his signature for £2,000, with a further £1,000 after completion of ten first team matches.

It was a potentially difficult ask, replacing the retired Tom van Vollenhoven, but a fabulous 90-yard interception try on his debut against Whitehaven at Knowsley Road on 20th August 1968 and a last-minute three-pointer against Wigan in the Lancashire Cup semi-final six matches later made him a firm favourite with the Knowsley Road faithful. He also scored two tries in the final against Oldham at Central Park.

Frank won virtually every honour during his 310 appearances in the red vee, scoring 175 tries in the process. Initially a winger, with pace and evasion, he could also play in the centres or occasionally at stand-off. He was unlucky with injury at some crucial moments that meant he missed a couple of major finals, particularly the 1970 and 1971 Championship finals.

There were times when Frank’s form dipped but he always seemed to regain his place on merit in what was a very strong Saints’ squad which included Les Jones, Billy Benyon, Roy Mathias, Eddie Cunningham, John Walsh and Frank Myler at various times vying for places in a potent threequarter line.

Ironically, he picked up his full set of winner’s medals with Warrington when they beat Widnes in the Player’s No.6 Trophy final at Knowsley Road in 1978.

His last game for the Saints was in Auckland on the 1976 Australasian Tour, before he moved on to Workington and included further spells at Salford, Warrington and Cardiff Blue Dragons, amongst others. Frank also coached Pilkington Recs for a spell. He remains one of the most popular players ever to wear the famous red vee as the announcement of his induction drew unanimous approval.
