Biography of Steve Peters



HERITAGE NO : 933
Steve Peters was one of the greatest ever utility players to don the Saints jersey. A natural footballer, he was very smart in attack, a great defender and superb support player, who was at home in the centres or at half-back. He played 186 matches for the Saints between April 1979 and February 1986. Steve was a Lancashire representative, playing scrum-half against Cumbria at Central Park in 1981. He was part of the team that played so brilliantly to beat Hull KR in the 1985 Premiership Final. Steve also went on the club tour to New Zealand that followed that Final. Steve went on to Warrington after his days at Knowsley Road. He also had spells with Oldham and Leigh, joining the latter in 1988.

In the autumn of 1979, Saints were at a crossroads. It was obvious that the golden era of the club which started in 1952 had come to an end. As in 1967, when Saints were also at a crossroads, they turned to their seemingly endless pool of local talent to guide the club into a safe harbour. In 1967 it was Alan Whittle, Les Jones and Eric Chisnall who came to the rescue. In 1979 players such as Roy Haggerty, Chris Arkwright, Denis Litherland, Kevin Meadows, Brian Parkes and Steve Peters were thrown the gauntlet.

Steve was signed from Blackbrook on 10 March 1978 and made his debut on 29 April 1979 against Bradford Northern in a 13-12 victory.

After a slow start to the 1979-80 season, a team that included Parkes, Litherland, Steve Peters and Roy Haggerty got over the line in a brave 15-7 win against Hull KR. Peters had established himself as a reliable inside back who was a solid defender, good enough to play for Lancashire against Yorkshire at Central Park, Wigan in 1981.

When Mal Meninga came to a Billy Benyon coached team in 1984, it was said that he was the final piece of the jigsaw for a good young locally produced team. This was true because young St Helens boys like Harry Pinner, Neil Holding, Chris Arkwright, Paul Forber, Barry Ledger, Andy Platt, Sean Day, Roy Haggerty, Shaun Allen and of course Steve Peters all flourished in a wonderful season of attacking rugby league with Mal Meninga on the pitch to give them confidence.

In total, Steve made 186 appearances, 13 off the bench for the Saints, scoring 32 tries and won a Lancashire Cup winner’s medal against Wigan in 1984 and a Premiership winner’s medal against Hull KR in 1985 and also picked up a Lancashire Cup runner’s up medal against Warrington in 1982.

Steve’s last game for Saints was under new coach Alex Murphy on 24th February 1986 in a 22-19 victory at Dewsbury in the Challenge Cup, after which he joined Warrington and subsequently played for Oldham and Leigh. Steve also toured New Zealand with the Saints in 1985.
