Biography of Ernie Mills

HERITAGE NO : 575
Ernie Mills by Alex Service

A local lad, who lived in Talbot Street, Ernie Mills first came into prominence as a member of the Saints senior team in the War Emergency League. His debut was against a powerful Keighley team at Knowsley Road and he was at loose forward that afternoon, with Harry Finney and Norman Thompson in the back row. It proved to be quite a spirited performance from the home team and the young debutant, although they eventually lost the game 17-23.

Essentially he was a loose forward, but Ernie had the all-round ability to enable him to play in the centres if need be. Indeed, he played against Widnes in Saints first pre-war league match against Widnes at Knowsley Road in the left centre position and once again did well. He scored a try, but the Chemics came away with an 8-20 victory. Ernie's winger that afternoon was another local lad, Frank Riley.

Ernie could also kick goals, although he was utilised sparingly, with the likes of the Stott brothers around. The Saints, of course, were at the start of a long building process that would see them start to become one of the rugby league elite during the early 1950s, but success was at a premium during Ernie's time at Knowsley Road. Yet he was a valued team member, with excellent all-round skills. Perhaps one of his finest moments came at Central Park, Wigan on Good Friday 1947, in front of over 30,000 fans, when the Saints upset the form book with a shock 12-7 victory. Ernie was on the left wing, with Jimmy Stott as his centre. On the other wing was Duggie Greenall.

The 1946-47 season was to be his last in a Saints jersey and his final game was at right centre in the 7-18 defeat against Oldham on 12th April 1947 at Knowsley Road. Ernie later became a valuable member of the ground staff at the club. He was a Pattern Maker in a Gas Stoves Works and in 1939 he was living in Talbot Street, St Helens. He died in his home town in February 2005, aged 81.
