Biography of Steve Llewellyn

HERITAGE NO : 667
Stewart Marshall Llewellyn by Dave Dooley:
As a schoolboy `Llew` was unable to command a place in the school Rugby Union team because he was considered to be too small. This would have seemed incredible to the full backs and opposing wingers who were briefed with the task of preventing Llew`s tries as he crash-dived over in the corners of the Knowsley Road ground. He attended the same school as George Parsons in Abertillery. From there he went to Caerleon training college where Viv Harrison and Don Gullick also studied. His small frame steered him to play for the college soccer team. He joined the Welsh Guards in1943 and served in Italy during the Second World War. After the cessation of hostilities, Llew played a few games of rugby in Scotland for the Guards team which won the B.O.A.R. Championship.

Demobilised in 1946, he went to teach in his home town and began playing rugby again by accident. With a friend he went to watch an old boys` match. The team were short handed and he and his friend were asked to play. Llewellyn played in the second row and scored two tries. At the end of the 1945-46 season he joined Abertillery RU Club and was in the same team as George Parsons and Ray Price. His career moved on quickly and he played three county games. He was also invited to a Welsh trial but was unable to go because of illness.

Saints officials went to a Monmouth v Glamorgan county game specifically to watch George Parsons and Terry Cook. They came away impressed with Parsons and Llewellyn. Subsequently both players were approached to sign. Llewellyn immediately became interested, as he had already contemplated moving from his own town to get a job elsewhere. He had almost prepared for a move to join the RU club to Northampton, but accepted the Saints offer instead. He had never seen a Rugby League game or been approached by any other club. The St Helens offer came like a bolt out of the blue. Stewart (or Steve as he became known as in St Helens) signed for the Saints on the 23rd of January 1948 for a fee of £600. This was two days after George Parsons had committed himself to the St Helens club.

Both were set to make their debuts against Rochdale Hornets at Knowsley Road on the 23rd. of January. Steve takes up the tale of woe:

"Albert Butler caught the ball from the kick off took the ball up and broke his collar bone as he was tackled. Towards the end of the game I went down with cramp on the halfway line and their winger scampered past me and scored the winning try under the posts." After the match Len Constance advised Llew to pack up and go home.

Fortunately, Steve ignored this friendly advice and soon settled down in the professional code. His play was characterised by blistering speed, an excellent body swerve, strong hand-off and classic swan dives when scoring. His first try for the club came against Bustlingthorpe Vale in the away first round Challenge Cup tie as Saints prevailed by 13 points to 2. The highlight of the 1947/48 season was Llew`s five tries in the 44 points to 10 victory over York on the 27th of March 1948. Steve finished the season with 11 tries from 15 matches - an impressive strike rate that he was set to continue throughout his career. The following season brought a hat trick against Liverpool Stanley away and five tries against the same opponents at home. The Liverpool club would bring rich pickings for Llew in years to come. He also netted three further hat tricks against Hunslet, Oldham and Whitehaven ending the campaign with 23 tries from 28 appearances making him the top try scorer at the club.

The following season found Steve as top try scorer again yielding just one hat trick against Workington Town but regular contributions brought up a total of 26 tries from 40 games. As Saints built their great post-war team, Llew finished a third straight season as the club`s top try score with 26 tries from 35 games in 1950/51. This latest haul included another hat trick against Liverpool City and five tries against Whitehaven. The 1951/52 season was almost a write-off for Steve as injuries restricted his appearances to just 7 matches.

However, the introduction of Jim Sullivan as coach rejuvenated Steve and the team to one of their greatest ever seasons - the 1952/53 campaign. In that season Saints remained undefeated in away matches as Llew ended the season with 35 tries from as many matches. This total included hat tricks against Bramley and Keighley. The destruction of Wakefield Trinity by 69 points to 17 included a five try haul from Steve. As well as finishing top of the league by dropping only 6 points from 36 matches, the Club lifted the Championship by defeating Halifax by 24 points to 14 at Maine Road. Saints won the Lancashire League Championship by 10 points but lost the Lancashire Cup Final to Leigh and the Challenge Cup Final to Huddersfield. In the latter match Steve completed a beautiful move to score at Wembley but it was not enough to hold off the gritty Huddersfield side who prevailed by 15 points to 10.

The highlight of the 1953/54 season was the 16 points to 8 victory over Wigan. As Saints were winning by 11 points to 8 in the final quarter of the game Llewellyn hoisted a high kick towards the Wigan tryline, fellow Welshman Glyn Moses was on hand to collect and score close to the posts - another illustration of Llew`s strong all round game. 37 tries from 43 matches returned Steve to the top of the Saints tryscoring charts for that season. A four try haul against Liverpool City augmented hat tricks against Swinton, Castleford, Salford and Widnes.

The 1954/55 season was depressing for Steve with a solitary appearance against Salford. Llew had more than his fair share of injuries during his career with breaks of his ankle, nose, finger, thumb and both collar bones. However, the following season Llew was instrumental in taking Saints to their first Challenge Cup win at Wembley. After the first drawn RL Challenge Cup semi-final against Barrow, Saints were plunged into an enthralling replay in front of 45 000 spectators at Central Park, Wigan. Incredibly, the teams battle resulted in a scoreless eighty minutes and extra time loomed. The deadlock continued until the 89th. minute when Moses fired out a pass to Llew 20 yards from his own line. Steve pushed his opposite number Frank Castle off balance and hared down the touchline. Castle eventually tracked the flying Welshman 35 yards from the Barrow posts as the Furnessmen`s cover defence was left in his wake. Llew broke free of this second attempted tackle and powered past scrum half Harris to score with a signature dive over the line. Rhodes converted and the Saints were on the Wembley way again. In the Final Steve Llewellyn finished off a memorable team move to dive over in the corner and take the Saints to a winning 8 points to nil score-line. That season witnessed Llew`s best try total for the Saints - 39. These included hat tricks against Keighley, Barrow, Dewsbury and Widnes and a record equalling 6 tries against Castleford in the second round of the Challenge Cup. Llew equalled this feat the following season with 6 tries against Liverpool City. He added two more hat tricks against Liverpool City and Barrow to boot! Eleven more matches in the 1957/58 concluded a wonderful career as Steve handed over his number two jersey to the `useful` Tom Van Vollenhoven.

Away from the Rugby League field Steve was a gifted teacher and a true gent. He worked at St Mathews CE School, Robins Lane and Grange Park where he eventually became Deputy Headteacher. His ties with the club remained throughout his life. He was the `A` team coach for many years and was always instantly recognisable donning his light brown duffle coat. Stewart Llewellyn Marshall died aged seventy-eight in the new year of 2003. The tributes below were posted on the Saints Messageboard at the time and serve to illustrate the stature of the great man.

What a great bloke Steve Llewellyn was! He was one of my teachers when I went to Grange Park in the late 60`s early 70`s and he left a lasting impression on me. He always remembered his pupils` names and always had time for them, even many years after leaving school. I was never fortunate enough to see him play, but I have heard many stories of his skill from my parents. I know he has been ill in recent years, but he was always seemed a very private person and can only imagine that it would be at his families request to keep things quiet. But I do feel that the passing such a great man and player, who left his mark on the lives of many people in various ways, should be announced in a way befitting his memory.

Thanks a lot Steve ! BJ Saint

Just reading Andrew Quirkes memories of Knowsley Road and Steve Llewellyn is mentioned a lot by various players and non-players as a great man. I never saw him play but he was deputy head at Grange Park when I was there in the late 70`s early 80`s. As BJ Saint said he knew everyone`s name, and will be missed by RL fans and ex Grange Park pupils. SPUD

I believe Steve was 78. I would just like to echo the aforementioned sentiments. He was a man of integrity, a great teacher and fantastic winger. He perfected the dive over in the corner. Our thoughts are with his family. Arthur Bitter

May I mention a couple of true stories about him-:Against Leigh away. Leigh kicked off to start the game and Llewellyn went down on one knee to make a basket with his arms and body and caught the ball cleanly but the ground was so hard that he stayed down. He had dislocated (or broken) his knee and was taken off after only a few seconds. I think it was the first game on the ground that they now play on. One season against Wigan in the home and away games and each time Llew caught the ball straight from the starting kick and went through the Wigan team and scored a try, without anyone else touching the ball. Great to watch and witness. Stantheman

He taught me at the same time. You were always scared of him because he had the loudest voice ever, but when you were in his class, you couldn`t have asked for a nicer fellow. Saint Val
