As the great Saints side of the 1970s dispersed and club honours started to run dry, Saints once again turned to the valleys in order to regenerate their fortunes. In a blaze of publicity Saints plucked the brightest new jewel from Welsh Rugby Union when they signed the Llanelli international full back, Clive Griffith for a record £27 500. In the past such signings had ignited a fresh Saints` glory trail, but sadly this was not to be in this particular case. Clive seemed to possess all the necessary ingredients to become a great success in rugby league. He had a safe pair of hands, accurate place kicking, sound defence, speed and evasive skills.

After a salutary introduction to the code in his debut match against Widnes in the first round of the Lancashire Cup, Clive faced another tough encounter against Warrington the following week. The club`s second successive home defeat brought even worse news for the club and Griffiths as he fractured his left arm in a freak collision as he leapt to collect a high punt. Further luckless injuries stopped Clive stringing together a prolonged run of matches in the first team. However, fans witnessed glimpses of his potential such as the Castleford match on December 2nd. 1979 when Clive scored a try and kicked 6 goals in a 39 points to 21 victory.

He fared better in the 1980/1 season as he slotted over 71 goals, landed three drop goals and scored a try. At this time Saints were bleeding a large crop of exciting local youngsters which often exposed Clive as the last line of defence more than he would have wished. All successful full backs need a sustained run in the team behind a team with a strong go-forward to allow backs demonstrate their attacking prowess. The next two seasons saw Clive in and out of the side playing in the centre or on the wing with some outings at his favoured full back role. Two modest goal hauls of 42 belied Clive`s potential scoring prowess.

Ashe team consolidated and grew in confidence the 1983/4 season provided an opportunity for Clive to enjoy an extended run in the first team on the wing. He twice collected 18 points from seven goals and a try against Fulham and Wakefield Trinity to end the campaign with a career best total of 179 points from 5 tries, 77 goals and 5 drop goals. Despite his best out-turn results, Saints transferred him to Salford at the end of his fifth season at Knowsley Road.

On the international scene Clive made two substitute appearances for Wales against France in 1980 and 1981.

When you weigh up Clive`s patchy career with the Saints,it seems to accompany an improbable playing record. In exactly 100 appearances he scored 598 points from 276 goals, 8 drop goals and 11 tries. His goals position him eleventh on the all-time list. In September 1986, Clive returned to the club to take up the position of fitness conditioner. His enthusiasm for his adopted code never waned and a move into coaching the welsh national team led to some creditable performances under his guidance including a World Cup semi-final match that frightened the eventual winners Australia with a fantastic first half performance that gave Wales a healthy half time lead.
