Bill made his debut for the Saints against deadly rivals St. Helens Recs at Knowsley Road on Boxing Day 1938. He played on the right wing and kicked a goal, but despite his efforts the visitors came away with a 4-5 success. Welshman Stan Powell was his centre. He went on to play against the visiting New Zealanders on their ill-feted trip to England just before the declaration of war in September 1939. He was in the second row this time, but could not prevent the Kiwis from coming away from Knowsley Road with a 3-19 victory.

Bill played a number of matches for the Saints during the conflict, including the War Emergency League, with his brother Ike, who was a specialist hooker. Bill went on to serve in the Parachute Regiment and returned to Knowsley Road, playing the last of his 76 matches for the club at loose forward against Hull KR at Craven Park on 17 January 1948. He scored a try, but the Saints went down 10-17. Bill, who was very much a utility player, later went to Barrow for a spell, where he made 8 appearances, in 1948.

Educated at Parr Mount School, Bill is the Uncle of Saints' Great Britain loose forward Harry Pinner and he remained a bachelor throughout his life. A lovely man, he worked for St. Helens Council for more than thirty years in the Highways department, but had suffered a stroke in the late 1970s and he died in a Parr nursing home in January 1984, aged 64.
