A case of a home-grown player who found fame with other teams! John first came to prominence with Keighley as a loose forward and went to Rochdale Hornets, where he operated essentially as a stand-off. He enjoyed particular success with five tries during the Hornets' run to the John Player final in 1973-74, where they were beaten by Warrington. Indeed his outstanding performances made him a late replacement for the 1974 Australian Tour, when he played in 18 matches. A clever player, with great hands and elusive, John joined Salford in March 1975, a team very much in their pomp. He appeared in the 1975 Lancashire Cup final and the 1976 Premiership final, although beaten in the latter by Saints' magnificent Dad's Army outfit. John did win a League Championship medal with the Reds at the end of the 1975-76 campaign, however.
In 1979, John moved to Wigan for a £15,000 fee and kept up his try-scoring success. A Lancashire County representative, John came to Knowsley Road in August 1981 for £10,000. Yet it was a difficult time at the club, with the team largely being rebuilt from the glory days of the 1970s. Despite this, John showed once again that he was a superb player in his first season, making over 30 appearances and scoring 9 tries. Although the rest of his time at St.Helens was not quite as successful, his on-field experience was vital in the development of young players such as Andy Platt, Shaun Allen, Roy Haggerty, Barrie Ledger and Chris Arkwright.
