Biography of Steve Bayliss

Steve, who originally played for Ystradgynlais and Neath, was a hard working back with a good defence and support play. He had tremendous upper body strength. He played 42 matches for the Saints and scored 16 tries. The red headed winger or centre scored a hat trick against Castleford in September 1981. Steve moved to play with Fulham in 1982 and represented Wales at rugby league. He also had a a season with Lezignan Sangliers in France in 1986.

Recruited from Ystradgynlais and Neath as a 20 year, Steve was a pacy, strong red-haired lad who came into a struggling team. He played an A team trial in February 1980 and after 20 minutes or so he hadn’t touched the ball. A wag in the crowd shouted “You are going to have to go looking for the ball, son, if you want to make an impression.” Right on cue Bayliss got the ball and sliced through the opposition defenders; got to the line and instead of putting the ball down passed it over the line to the Saints right winger who had switched off and he dropped the pass!

Steve was injury prone in his first spell at Saints but when fit he was part of a revival in early 1980 which proved to be a false dawn. His luck was summed up when falling on a ball in the Saints’ in goal against Warrington on 23 November 1980. He somehow caught his elbow on a brick that had been somehow left lying around and the subsequent damage kept him out for a few months.

He seemed to become somewhat disillusioned in 1982 and left to play in the Fulham Revolution and also had a season in France with Lezignan Sangliers in 1986. Alex Murphy brought him back to the club in 1987 when he played a further 10 games which ironically for a fine attacking player, he failed to score. His defensive qualities, however, were excellent.

Steve first made his senior debut against York on 4 March 1980 and he played for Wales against England in 1981, while still a Saints player. There was a feeling that there was more to this player than circumstances allowed and after his last match against Castleford on 4 March 1987, he apparently drifted from the game.
