MATCH REPORT : Catalans spent much of the opening five minutes camped on the Saints line. They tried to shift it left but Mathieu Laguerre’s pass to Tom Johnstone sailed into touch. The visitors did take the lead 11 minutes in. Jordan Abdull put a kick into the far corner and Johnstone was wide open to score the opening points of the evening. Arthur Mourgue converted, 0-6 Catalans led. It was a first half of very few chances at the Totally Wicked Stadium. Saints did grab their first points of the game on the half-hour mark though. The hosts forced an error in the Catalans half, a few tackles in the Red V shifted it right and Jack Welsby found Konrad Hurrell with an offload and he strolled over from close range to score. Mark Percival converted to level the scores at 6-6. From the restart, George Delaney returned the ball and was hit high. Franck Maria was sent to the sin bin as a result of the shot and Saints had a penalty. That was how it remained at the break, 6-6 it was tied. Saints took the lead three minutes into the second half. A high kick was patted backwards by Lewis Dodd for Sione Mata’utia who scored. The on-field call of try was agreed with after a video referee decision. Percival added two more points, 12-6. Five minutes later, Saints had a third try. Welsby broke down the Catalans right edge after collecting a pass from Moses Mbye and found Tommy Makinson who scored in the corner. Percival added two more points from the right touchline, 18-6. With fifteen minutes to go, we have another trip upstairs. A kick from Mbye was grounded under the sticks by Matty Lees. Again, the on-field verdict of try was agreed with by the video referee. Percival added the extras, 24-6. Catalans grabbed a consolation try with six minutes to go. Theo Fages put Julian Bousquet through a gap to score. Mourgue converted, 24-12.That scored remained intact up to the hooter, Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their excellent report. |
