MATCH REPORT : Saints took an early lead at the Totally Wicked Stadium. The ball went quickly through the hands down our right edge, Mark Percival finding Tommy Makinson who backed himself to go around the outside of Jake Connor and score in the corner. Percival converted from the touchline, 6-0 Saints led. A second try soon followed. Saints marched downfield and Jack Welsby threw a cut-out pass over everyone’s heads, and it landed in Makinson’s arms to stroll over in the corner. Percival converted, 12-0. Huddersfield had a great chance to reduce the deficit 12 minutes in. Leroy Cudjoe threw a good offload to Jake Bibby, he had options both inside and outside, but his pass went to ground and Saints survived. 17 minutes in, Matty English was sent to the sin bin for a late tackle. Saints had a good chance to increase our lead in the 21st minute. Huddersfield knocked on, before the referee awarded the penalty for dissent. Percival converted from in front of the sticks, 14-0. Another score almost followed, as Jack Welsby tried to ground Lewis Dodd’s deflected kick, but the referee ruled knock on. Former Saint, Joe Greenwood was then sent off, for leading with his forearm whilst carrying in the ball. The visitors did go close to grabbing their first points of the game with ten minutes of the half to go, but a great tackle by Tee Ritson forced Ashton Golding into touch as he went for the corner. Huddersfield did grab a try towards the end of the first half. A high kick from Jake Connor was caught by Sam Halsall, he then found English on his inside to dive over under the sticks. Oliver Russell converted, 14-6 Saints led. Saints grabbed a try with 30 seconds of the half to go. Welsby got the ball and opted to go back down the short-side, he broke through a gap and found Makinson who strolled over in the corner to complete a first half hat-trick. Percival narrowly missed the kick, as Saints led 18-6 at the break. Midway through the second half, Saints almost had another. Jonny Lomax broke through after collecting a pass from Sione Mata’utia, he found Tee Ritson on the wing who dove over in the corner, but the touch judge said the winger had gone into touch before grounding the ball. Huddersfield then grabbed their second try. A move from left to right ended with Russell throwing a cut-out pass to Golding on the right wing, who planted the ball down in the corner. Connor converted, 20-12 Saints led. Another try soon followed. Connor ran across the line and found Kevin Naqiama, he then broke through before breaking Welsby’s tackle to score next to the sticks. Connor added the extras, 20-18. Saints were able to increase the lead as we entered the final few minutes. Dodd’s high kick was claimed by Mata’utia, he then returned the favour by kicking ahead for Dodd to chase and ground the loose ball. Percival made it a two-score game, 26-18 Saints led. Our fifth try came 20 seconds from time. A good offload from Morgan Knowles allowed the ball to be worked to Dodd, he put in a kick and Welsby claimed before diving over the line to the left of the sticks. Percival converted, as Saints beat Huddersfield 32-18 in the rearranged round one clash. Thanks to the Saints Media Centre for their excellent report. |
