Coach: Mick Potter

Won: Lost: Drawn:

After Daniel Anderson's three and a half year tenure came to an end, the Saints appointed another Australian incumbent to the role. Michael 'Mick' Potter was born in Parramatta and was an outstanding full-back in his playing days, initially with Canterbury Bulldogs [1983-88] where he won two Premierships in the mid-1980s. Potter moved to St George from 1989-93, winning the Prestigious Dally M Medal.

An Origin and Country Origin representative, Mick finished his career with a spell at the Western Reds in Perth in 1995-96 and really come to the fore in coaching circles after a two-year spell at Catalans Dragons, getting them to a Challenge Cup final in 2007 - the first at the 'new' Wembley – where they were defeated by the Saints. He was also Super League Coach of the Year in 2008, another reason why the St Helens club were more than willing to recruit him for the start of the 2009 season on an initial two-year deal.

Saints had been renowned for their attacking flair for several years and had been consistently in the mix for major honours. Perhaps the number of matches had started to take a toll on the squad, but the team did perform well in both league and cup competitions, although a 14-24 reversal at the hands of Huddersfield Giants was hard to swallow – their first defeat at that level since 2005. Second-placed Saints battled past Huddersfield and Wigan in the play-offs to play 'top Dogs' Leeds Rhinos at Old Trafford, only to lose 10-18 in a dour, somewhat pragmatic affair.

Thoughtful and vastly experienced, Mick led the Saints into their final season at Knowsley Road in 2010 with the team once again finishing in second place, four points behind Wigan Warriors. Keiron Cunningham's last-gasp try against Castleford Tigers ensured two home play-offs against Warrington and Huddersfield, before Grand Final heartache struck once more, with Wigan Warriors winning 10-22 in front of over 70,000 fans. Leeds Rhinos also snatched a 28-32 win in the Challenge Cup semi-final.

It had been a season disrupted by injuries and changing personnel. Mick departed for Bradford Bulls from 2011-12, where he did an admirable job despite a dire financial outlook for the club. He returned Down Under with Wests Tigers [2013-14] and took charge of the Fijian National side in 2018, followed by a spell as interim Coach of Canterbury Bulldogs in 2022, following the dismissal of Trent Barratt. A great pity that he couldn't quite cross the line with the Saints during those final years at Knowsley Road.
