 HERITAGE NO : William Mercer PROBABLY SAME PLAYER AS NORTHERN UNION We are confident that this was the same chap who played extensively for the Saints in the days of the Northern Union. The Saints quite often gave opportunities for young local talent to demonstrate their prowess especially in months of April as the campaigns came to an end. We believe this was the case with William. He played against Wigan in an away fixture on the 6th of April, 1895. The match ended in a draw with both teams failing to score a point. Whatever occurred William did not make his Northern Union debut until April 1899. After that he went on to make 46 first team appearances. Probably the 19 year old needed more time to develop physically for life in the pack of forwards. William was born in St. Helens on the 11th of June 1875. He lived for decades at 32 Lowe Street close to the centre of St. Helens. In his playing days he worked as a glass gatherer and later as an electric hoist driver. William died in his hometown in January 1945 at the age of 69. |
