 HERITAGE NO : Thomas Fitzgerald CLUB STEWARD Thomas was born in Kilkevin, Roscommon, Ireland on the 26th of September 1871. He came over to St. Helens in the 1880s and in 1891 he was living at 32 Mount Street St. Helens. He was one of five Irishmen lodging with the widow Mary Maguire. All five lodgers were working as chemical labourers. Thomas broke into the first team in April 1895 just before the Saints joined the Northern Union. He played in the forwards for six matches that month. He made a try-scoring debut in an away win over Warrington on the 1st of April 1895. The Saints won that match by 11 points to nil, thanks to that try by Thomas himself and two drop goals from Joe Allen and Bob Doherty. His final match was in the penultimate match of that campaign when the St. Helens suffered a narrow loss to Wigan by 7 points to 3 despite Peter Dale scoring a cracking try for the Saints. In 1901 he was a beer seller at 25/27 Water Street, St. Helens and married to Elizabeth Isabella nee McGovern and they went on to 7 children. Thomas must have served a particularly good pint because he had become the Club Steward at Buttonwood Brewery by 1911. We know that he had returned to live at 119 Shaw Street in St. Helens by 1917 and obtained work as a contractor to Sutton Manor Colliery. Thomas died in St Helens in February 1933 at the age of 63. |
