Biography of Frederick Cookson |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Frederick Cookson ONE OF THIRTEEN Frederick was born on the 4th of November 1864 in St. Helens. His father, James, was a gardener who hailed from Kirkham in Lancashire. In 1881, Frederick lived at 27 Peter Street, St. Helens and he was employed at a Chemical Works as a labourer. Their house was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. His only first team match was quite a remarkable affair. On the 19th of January, 1895 the Saints played a match against a St Helens district team, comprising of players from various junior teams in the town. To even up the contest the Saints played with only 13 men, quite prescient if one considers the matter for a while. Their opposition were allowed a team of 17 in their line up. Despite the numerical imbalance the Saints ran out comfortable winners by 23 points to nil. Tries emerged from Allen, McLees, McKay, Graham and Whiteley and Tom Ludlow booted over four goals. We can assume that Frederick had played a number of matches for the St Helens RFC Reserves team and his selection was a reward for his loyalty. There again he could have been undergoing a kind of trial that day. |
