HERITAGE NO : John Banks AWAY DAY IN ULVERSTON John was a local lad who was born in St. Helens in January 1872. His father, Thomas, was a clock cleaner and repairer had been born in Brotherton, Yorkshire. In 1891 John was living with his parents at 27 Raglan Street, St. Helens. In that year he was working as a general labourer. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. He was a member of the St Helens Reserves team and made his first team debut on the 17th of November 1894 in the away fixture at Ulverston. The weather was particularly foul that day and the match ended in a scoreless draw. In his sole appearance John played on the wing. On the 30th of April 1893 John married Annie Southward and they went on to have a daughter named Thomasina. In 1911, the young family were living at. 90 Waterfall Crescent in Sutton, St. Helens. John died in St. Helens in April 1922 at the age of 50. |
