Biography of James Simcox

HERITAGE NO :
James William Simcox

ONE OF THREE SIMCOX SAINTS

He was always referred to as William. He was was born in Southwick, Sunderland, Durham in early 1870. The Simcox family moved to St. Helens in the late 1870s. In 1881 John was living with his family at 25 Barton Street, St. Helens. His father John was working as a glass maker in a local factory.

James had two brothers who also played for the Saints, John and Arthur. They must hold a record for any three brothers who have all donned the colours of St. Helens RFC. That record is, in total they only played four matches between them. John made just one first team appearance for the Saints. His debut and only first team match was on the 7th of November 1894 against Swinton.. The Saints were facing a tough away encounter. At the end of the match William emerged on the losing side with the Lions winning by 3 points to nil.

In 1891 he was living with his parents at 53 Stanhope Street in St Helens and working as a railway brakesman. He was still at that address in 1901. William remained in St. Helens. He died in the town in January 1951 at the age of 83.
