Biography of William Barrow

HERITAGE NO :
William James Barrow

EASTER EGG CHASER

William was a local lad who was born in Sutton, St Helens on the 17th of January, 1874. His father, Thomas, operated as a railway signalman. In 1891, the family were living at 6 Blinkhorn Street, Sutton, St. Helens and William was working as sheet glass gatherer.

William played his only two first team matches for the Saints over the Easter weekend of 1894. He played in the forwards on his debut in the home victory over Barton on the 24th of March 1894. The Saints won a tight contest by 5 points to 4, thanks to a try from Sam Jones and a goal from Pasha Graham. On Easter Monday, the 26th of March 1894, the Saints were at home again against their old friends from Kendal. The scoreline of 38 points to nil demonstrates how much improvement the St. Helens side had made over previous seasons. The Saints ran riot by notching up 12 tries. These comprised of two hat tricks from Tom Ludlow and Bob Doherty, a brace from Bill Whiteley and singleton touchdowns from Cross, Ashcroft, Gill and Appleton. Remarkably, the home team through Pasha Graham converted only one of these tries. This is his only recorded first team match but he was also likely to have played for the Saints’ Reserves team as well.

In October 1896, William married Ellen Pemberton and they went on to have four children. By 1911, the family had moved to the centre of St. Helens to a residence in Oxford Street.

William died in St. Helens in January 1941 at the age of 67.
