Biography of James Gormley |
---|
HERITAGE NO : James Gormley SHAMROCK INN PUBLICAN James was born in Widnes in October 1874. In 1881 he was living at 8 Elizabeth Street in Widnes. His father, Michael, was a labourer in an alkali factory. In the early 1890s James moved to the Pocket Nook area of St. Helens. Pocket Nook was small neighbourhood close to the industrial sector encompassing the Sankey Canal and main railway lines. The terraced houses were home to a significant number of people from Irish descent. James made his debut for the Saints on the 10th of March, 1894 against Mossley at Knowsley Road. The Saints were victorious that day by a whopping 56 points to 3. Before a crowd of around 2000, three players scored hat tricks; namely Tom Sudlow, John Appleton and Bob Doherty. Other tries were attributed to a brace from Peter Dale, Ned Ashcroft and Harry May who also booted over 7 goals. Remarkably, that was his only appearance in the first team. The incumbent half back was Joe McLees who had suffered an injury the week before. In April 1895, James married Mary Wynne in St. Helens and they soon gave birth to a son, Thomas. Tommy Gormley went on to play centre for St. Helens on 67 occasions from 1919 to 1923 before transferring to local rivals St Helens Recs, where he achieved great success. The couple ran the Shamrock Inn in Pocket Nook, a great community public house. Sadly, James died in December 1900 at the age of just 26. His wife, Mary, continued to run the business and bring up young Tommy. |
