Biography of Edwin Faram |
---|
HERITAGE NO : Edwin Faram WAITING IN THE WINGS Edwin was born in St Helens on the 26th of August 1869. His father Frederick was born in Lawton, Cheshire and worked as a shipping clerk. Edwin’s mother, Anne, originated in West Newton in Cumberland. The family lived in Boundary Road, St. Helens. Edwin played on the wing against the Liverpool team, Tuebrook, on the 18th of November 1893. The Saints were victorious that day. We can presume that Edwin was a regular player with the Reserves side. At the time the Saints had a classy three-quarters line up of Bob Doherty, John Appleton, David Traynor and Tom Sudlow. For Edwin there would very few opportunities to supplant any of those incumbents. Edwin married Catherine Greenall in 1895 and they had two children , George and Ethel. He worked as a sales clerk and office manager at a glassworks and the family lived in Harris Street, St Helens. Sadly Catherine died in 1914. However, just one year later Edwin married again, this time the bride was a widow, Elizabeth Arrowsmith. Although we do not have a photograph of Edwin we know a little about him from a trip of a lifetime which he made with his wife, Elizabeth, to Canada and the USA in 1936. The adventurers sailed to Quebec and then traversed across Canada, presumably by train, to the West Coast. The trip lasted 59 days and Edwin funded the holiday with the princely sum of £200. A travel document required to cross into the USA describes Edwin as 5 feet 6” tall, having a fair complexion and brown eyes. Edwin died on the 27th of October, 1946, aged 77. At the time Edwin was residing at Brown Fells, 437 Prescot Road ,St. Helens. He was survived by Elizabeth, his second wife and a sum of £1,010-1s-11d was bequeathed in his will. |
