HERITAGE NO : HARRY MAY ALTRINCHAM ALL ROUNDER Harry was born in July 1866 in Altrincham. His father, John, was a joiner and Harry would earn a crust pursuing the same trade. Harry was prepared to travel to play rugby. His name is bandied about in the newspapers in the early 1890s as a player for the St.Helens Recreation and Runcorn. The all round player had also represented Cheshire. Harry made his debut for the Saints on the 9th of September 1893 in a home victory against arch rivals Wigan. He was a stylish centre three-quarter who could score tries and kick goals. In all Harry made 15 appearances for the Saints scoring two tries and kicking 10 goals and a drop goal. His last match in this period was against Birkenhead Wanderers on the 30th of April 1894. This was the last match of that particular season and Harry demonstrated his versatility by donning the full back jersey. For the next season Harry was to return home to play for Altrincham. That said it was no the last time that Harry would play for the Saints. NORTHERN UNION ERA Harry joined the professional Saints club from Altrincham for the start of the 1896-97 campaign and played in the first two matches of the season. The opener, at home to Rochdale Hornets, was won by 6points to 5. The second, at Salford, on 19th September 1896 was a scoreless draw. Harry played centre in both matches, firstly to Tom Sudlow and then with Bob Doherty. After his brief rugby revival at Knowsley Road, Harry settled down to work as a joiner in Cheadle, Cheshire. He married Phoebe Alderton in 1902. Later he moved to live at 105 Adswood Road, Stockport. Harry died in that town on the 4th of September 1949 at the age of 78. |
