Biography of Edward Appleton |

HERITAGE NO : Edward Appleton BEATS WIGAN SCORES A TRY AND NEVER PLAY AGAIN Edward Appleton was born in St Helens in November 1870. He was part of a large family emanating from the Thatto Heath area of the town. His brother, John, was a regular back for the Saints before the days of the Northern Union. He worked as a coal miner for many years following in the footsteps of his father who was an engine worker in the local pits. He married Mary Boardman in 1888 and in 1891 he could be found in Warrington, Whiston with his wife and two young children. He was still employed in the coal mines. His rugby career was short but sweet. In the second match of the 1893/4 season the Saints played Wigan at home on the 9th of September, 1893. Edward played with his brother John in the forwards, which was unusual for John who consistently featured in the Saints three-quarters. Perhaps he was there to furnish some protection for his debut sibling. In the end perhaps the highlight of the game for John must have been witnessing Edward score a try as the Saints triumphed over the auld enemy by 6 points to nil. For the record Tom Sudlow, the demon winger, scored the other touchdown. The mystery of course is to explain why Edward never played for the first team again. Perhaps he sustained a serious injury. By 1911 he had ventured considerably to live in Rawlinson Lane, Heath Charnock, near Chorley, Lancashire. Though the house was new, he was still toiling down the coal mines. By then he had acquired a fine brood of ten children. Edward and his wife Mary did return later to live in his town of birth. We know that he was operating a grocers shop in Borough Road St Helens along with his wife and son Thomas. |
