Biography of William Alforde |
---|
HERITAGE NO : William Alforde GUEST TANNER William was born in Warrington on the 12th of November 1869. His father, James, was a file cutter. He worked variously as an iron worker on the railways and in the tanning factories of the town as a labourer. As an adult he lived with his wife Mary nee Darbyshire and their daughter Alice at 15 Peters Place, Warrington. On the rugby field William made his debut for the Saints in a hard fought victory over Rochdale Hornets on the 29th of April 1893. He played in the centre that day as the Saints ran out winners in the final match of the 18992/3 season. In the game McLees and Appleton scored tries and Tommy Foulkes. dropped a goal. This was his only appearance for our club and we believe that he was a guest player from the Warrington club. William died in Warrington in 1942 at the age of 72. |
