HERITAGE NO : Tom Reynolds PLAYED IN FIRST NORTHERN UNION MATCH FOR THE SAINTS Tom was a local lad who was born in St Helens on the 25th of May, 1868. His father, Gilbert, was a glassworks labourer. In 1891 Tom was living at 49 Lugsmore Lane in Thatto Heath, St. Helens. Tom also played for the St. Helens Recs as a youngster. He made a single appearance for the Saints in a Charity match against top side Liverpool on the 20th of April 1893. Tom played in the forwards as the Saints run out winners by 17 points to nil. The points came from a brace of tries from Tom Sudlow and further tries from Patrick Dolan and Ralph Fildes. Fellow Thatto Heather Tommy Foulkes booted over three goals. In 1895 when the Saints decided to join the Northern Union and St.Helens Recs were dithering, Tom made his move to join the town team. Tom was ready and willing to take his place in the pack for the first ever Northern Union match for the Saints on the 7th of September 1895 against Rochdale Hornets. He went on to play in the first ever Challenge Cup Final in 1897 for the Saints before transferring to Broughton Rangers. When Tom was transferred he went to lodge at 81 Edward Street in Salford. He worked there as a sheet glass cutter. Tom never returned to live in St. Helens and he died in Salford in March 1946 at the age of 77. |
