Biography of Patrick Dolan

HERITAGE NO :
Patrick Dolan

POCKET NOOK MINER

Patrick was a local lad who was born in St Helens in May 1870. His father, John, was a labourer. Both his parents emanated from Roscommon in Ireland. Their house was in the midst of the densely populated area of terraced housing close to the centre of the town. This was in a vibrant neighbourhood, with a definite Celtic tradition, where rugby football and athletics were the prevalent pastimes for young men. It is highly likely that Patrick played for Pocket Nook Shamrocks prior to trying his luck with St. Helens RFC.

He made his debut for the Saints in the charity match played against Liverpool on the 20th of April, 1893. This game was played annually with the money raised going to the Providence Hospital in St. Helens. The Saints won that day. We are uncertain that Patrick was a regular member of the Reserves side at Knowsley Road.

Patrick married Rose McCabe in Match 1903 and they went on to have four children. In 1911, the young family were living at 18 Pocket Nook Street, St. Helens and Patrick was working as a coal miner.

He died in St. Helens in January 1928 at the age of 57.
