HERITAGE NO : Tom Anderton LEIGH STAR LOAN Tom was one of the most prominent players for Leigh in the 1890s. He was born in Wigan on the 21st of December, 1867. His father, Richard, was a miner and a publican. In 1881 the family lived at The Saracens Head on Wigan Lane, Wigan. Tom was invited to play for the Saints in the away fixture at Runcorn on the 3rd of April, 1893. The match concluded in a scoreless draw. Tom was a classy centre who was awarded the number 3 Heritage Number for Leigh RLFC. He married Hager Edwardson in April 1892 and the couple lived at 25 Rydal Street, Leigh. At the time Tom was working as a blacksmith and mechanic at a brewery in Leigh. In 1939 they were resident at 40. Buchanan Street, Leigh. Tom died in Leigh in October 1949 at the age of 82. |
