HERITAGE NO : John Ernest Simcox ONE OF THREE BROTHERS ENDS UP IN MANITOBA John was born in Hailstone, Staffordshire in early 1873. The Simcox family to St. Helens in the late 1870s. In 1881 John was living with his family at 25 Barton Street, St. Helens. His father John was working as a glass maker in a local factory. John had two brothers who also played for the Saints, James and Arthur. They must hold a record for any three brothers who have all donned the colours of St. Helens RFC. That record is, in total they only played four matches between them. John was a winger who made two appearances for the Saints. His debut was on the 1st of April 1893 in an away fixture against Birkenhead Wanderers. That particular match ended in a draw with both sides failing to score a single point. His last match was a home affair against Tuebrook. The match ended in another draw with each team scoring four points. The Saints’ tries came from Bob Doherty and Joe Brownbill. John also played for the Reserves team. In 1900 he married Elizabeth Pimblett and one year later the couple were living at 9 Lascelles Street, St. Helens and John had a job as a coal miner. Ten years later John and Elizabeth had move to live in Pepper Street in Lymm, Cheshire where John worked in the salt works. The couple finally emigrated to live in St. Boniface, Manitoba, Canada. John died there on the 5th of July, 1944 at the age of 71. |
